All-on-4: A brand new smile in as little as two days

Many patients often prefer avoiding dental surgery because of the pain, time and costs associated with it. But all-on-4 has revolutionised the procedure to getting a full-arch restoration. Now, you can get a new set of teeth with minimal pain, reduced costs and in as little as two days.

What is all-on-4?

All-on-4 is an alternative implant technique created by Dr. Paulo Malo in 1998.  It is used to immediately rehabilitate patients wearing dentures or with deteriorating teeth. All-on-4 uses four implants supporting 12 teeth, hence the name “all-on-4″.

The all-on-4 procedure involves the removal of any remaining teeth, after which the implants are inserted.  The teeth are mounted on the implants one to two days after the initial procedure.

All-on-4 vs. traditional dentures

The all-on-4 bridge is fixed and can’t be removed by the patient.  This means your new teeth are firmly in place all the time so you avoid awkward social situations of having your teeth move around, or worse, fall from your mouth when eating or speaking.

It is also slim and lightweight and sits on the ridge of the jaw like natural teeth do.  This means that the roof of your mouth and gums are not in direct contact with the bridge, thus reducing pressure sores and discomfort.  Unlike removable dentures, the all-on-4 bridge also allows a significant return in taste and temperature sensation, allowing you to actually enjoy your meals again.

All-on-4 vs. other full-arch procedures

All-on-4 is a graft-less procedure.  Traditional dental surgery requires bone grafting, whereby bone is collected at another site (e.g. hip bone) to bulk up the jaw bone.  Bone grafting can get painful and uncomfortable, discouraging patients from proceeding with the surgery.  The success of bone grafting is uncertain, may fail for smokers and potentially worse, changing the structure of the jaw can aggravate the jaw joint causing other health issues.  With the all-on-4 procedure, the pain, discomfort and potentially issues of bone grafting are completely avoided.

With all-on-4, the surgery is completed, including the removal or decayed teeth and placement of implants, on the same day.  The teeth are then mounted one to two days after the initial procedure.  This means you can walk away with a brand new smile in as little as two days. Some other procedures are usually performed in separate stages.  For example, the process may involve bone grafting, waiting for the bone graft to heal, implant placement, waiting for the implants to fuse with bone, and then finally, insertion of a bridge with screws.  The entire procedure could take up to 18 months before it is completed.

Another benefit of the all-on-4 method is that it only uses four implants in each jaw while traditional implant techniques require six to eight implants in the upper jaw and five implants in the lower jaw.  Using only four implants in each jaw may translate to potential cost savings for you.  Plus, with the entire procedure being done in two days instead of 18 months, the time you save can be priceless.
