Porcelain Crowns

Or “cap” as commonly referred to are a bonded restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth.

Porcelain Crowns or “caps” are often used for:

  • heavily filled teeth with amalgam or tooth coloured fillings
  • broken teeth
  • aged crowns needing replacement
  • protection of a tooth after Root Canal Treatment
  • replacement of a Gold Crown

There are three types of Crowns:

1. An all Porcelain/Ceramic Crown more commonly used towards the anterior (front) of the mouth

2. A Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown where the inside of the Crown is lined with a non-precious metal for additional strength, more commonly placed towards the posterior (back) of the mouth.

3. Gold Crowns are not a common restoration these days, however may be recommended by the Dentist for a posterior (back of the mouth) restoration.
